Sundog CSA August 31st, 2026

Watering – plants and animals, will be our main task this first week of the ninth month of 2026. Sunday afternoon and checking the weather map and forecast – the first chance for rain is September 1st at 6 a.m. and last until 9 a.m. with the only problem being that it is a 1% chance meaning there is a 99% chance that it is not going to rain. Those are pretty good odds for a dry week with some fairly warm temperatures adding to the discomfort level. I saw three predictions for 100 degrees with today being the first one and then tomorrow and Tuesday. From there on, it goes down one degree each day ending with 95 degrees next Sunday. Guess we will be dragging hoses this week!!

NEXT WEEK – MONDAY. SEPTEMBER 7th IS LABOR DAY so there will be NO BAG DELIVERY THIS COMING WEEK! We are off for the day!

These pictures are focused on our weather conditions with the first one being the forecast for the coming week which I have been whining about. The second picture is all of our honeybees visiting the milkhouse to get drinks from Hank’s waterbucket. We have since come up with a water bucket of their very own for the bees because they resent people who get in their flight path and we tend to be in it several times a day when it is milking/chore time. The third was a false alarm, clouds that dropped a few drops resulting in a mad dash to the clothesline, at which time it promptly pulled up stakes and drifted off to the east.

Above are Katy’s pictures – first of Seth and Batty and the second is of Roni Walleye and Opal Bingus and the third is a late night picture of our moonflower as it climbs to the top of the feed bin and graces the night with the most fragrant of blooms.

Moon pictures from the eclipse and the morning after and the last one is the Full Sturgeon Moon.

I love the luxury of running water. I remember growing up without running water, walking out to the pump and having to prime it to get a bucket of water to heat up and wash dishes or put into the large bowl that was used for hand washing. Sticking my tongue on the pump handle in frosty weather was also part of my “pump experience”. And as a kid, I always worried about not getting it primed and was so relieved when my downward pull began to be work because it meant water was coming up from the bottom of the well. Outhouses and wringer washers were also part of the “good old days”. Who knew what was waiting for you in the dark in the little shack that served as a bathroom and there was always a path that you had to run down and back with fear sending prickles down your back until you were safely back inside. There are always positives and negatives about things so when people tell me that they wish they could go back to the good old days, I think about being able to turn the faucet and have a flow of either cool or hot water rush out and I know that they will be heading down that path to the past without me! 😊 Blessings from this hot and dry hill farm – Katy, Dan, Izzy Seth, Zach, Jen and Teresa
